Thank goodness all of René Lalique's Glass Figurines weren't "Cire Perdue" pieces! Cire Perdue means, literally, "lost wax." These Cire Perdues are one of a kind, limited editions in the utmost definition of limited!
Cire Perdue is a process in which the object is sculpted in wax, whereupon the wax object is encased with plaster, making a mold. The wax is heated and drained from the mold, which in turn is filled with liquid glass (molten glass.) The mold is broken off, and quite obviously, never used again.
René Lalique made well over a thousand different glass pieces of art during his lifetime. Perhaps his most recognizable items would be the Lalique Glass Figurines. Many of the Lalique Glass Figurines are birds, cats, and fish. They are truly some of the most exquisite decorative collectibles!
