Limoges porcelain was created in Limoges, France. In 1768, a white clay called kaolin was discovered near Limoges. Kaolin is one of the main ingredients in fine porcelain. The people almost immediately began putting their large supply of kaolin to good use. Less than 100 years later, Limoges porcelain was known throughout the world.
It can be said that the discovery of kaolin changed the destiny of Limoges, France. After it's discovery, Limoges factories started opening, providing work for many of the citizens. Exporting Limoges porcelain products became a huge business. Many of the Limoges porcelain products were left in their white state so that the porcelain's unique perfection could be seen.
