Josiah Wedgwood (1720-1795) founded his Wedgwood company by the time he was thirty. By the time Josiah was forty eight; his beautiful Wedgwood Black Basalt was introduced.
Wedgwood Black Basalt (also known as simply Wedgwood Basalt) takes its name from the volcanic rock with the same name. It is not surprising then that the Wedgwood Basalt is black in color. It does not have a high gloss finish; instead it has a polished look.
